hakka walled villages

The photographs displayed in this gallery were taken in the walled villages that pepper the countryside around Huiyang in Guangdong Province, southern China. All the villages were built many years ago as defensive homes by the Hakka people. Although many are in a serious state of disrepair, life within their walls still goes on in much the same way that it always has

beijing hutongs

yaumatei

The district of Yaumatei is one of the oldest areas of Kowloon and is a place steeped in Hong Kong's rich history and culture. These photographs were taken from 1995 to 1997 and document contemporary life in the streets and back alleys. The photographs were published in the book "In the Heart of the Metropolis - Yaumatei and its People" which was published by the Royal Asiatic Society - Hong Kong Branch.
