Hong Kong Pro-democracy demonstration, Edinburgh Scotland, UK
Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. 10 October 2020. Protestors from the Hong Kong Pro-democracy movement staged a demonstration at St Giles Cathedral today. The protestors, all Hong Kong nationals studying at Scottish universities, were protesting against China’s persecution of ethnic minority Uyghurs and the new national Security laws imposed on Hong Kong by China. The protestors wore facemarks not only as a health precaution but also to maintain anonymity. The National Security Law means Hong Kong nationals can be persecuted for protesting anywhere in the world. A mainland Chinese couple in an apartment opposite heckled the protestors and filmed them. This video could in theory be passed to the Chinese authorities and have grave consequences for the protestors if they were to be recognised. Iain Masterton/Alamy Live News
